St Catharines Athletics Open Four Game Home Stretch With Win

Wednesday night was the fourth time the St Catharines Athletics played on back-to-back nights. Including opening the month of June with three straight their record in those games is 1-3. Starting a four-game home stretch against the Oakville Buzz the A’s had nine different goal scorers combine for a 9-6 win, improving that record to 2-3.

Oakville already led 2-1 just over four minutes into the game, with the one St Catharines goal coming off the stick of Ari Steenhuis, the first of his career. However, back-to-back power plays allowed Gavin Howard and Keaton Zavitz to take the lead, and Noah Snyder capped a 4-2 period.

After making it 5-2, the Oakville Buzz’ Jake Dawick and Brian Jackman connected twice in 29 seconds. Trading goals to end the period made the score 6-5 for the A’s.

Two penalties from Jake Dawick in the third period led to a power play goal from Zackary Toll, and a shorthanded marker from Will Sheehan. His twenty-fifth was as close as the Buzz would get though, because Julian Race iced it with an empty netter in the final minute to win 9-6.

Zackary Toll was one of the nine scorers for the Athletics. He also added four assists. Keaton Zavitz finished with four points (1 goal, 3 assists).

The only multiple goal scorer in the game was Oakville’s Jake Dawick (2 goals). Will Sheehan had three points (1 goal, 2 assists).

St Catharines will host Six Nations (4-7) on Saturday, while the Oakville Buzz will host the Whitby Warriors (6-8) on Thursday night with a chance to move into second place outright.
