Orangeville Northmen Use Nine Goal Second Period To Remain Unbeaten

Pick your favourite historic stat or superlative. The Orangeville Northmen have probably topped it, or will soon. On Sunday night they used nine goals in the second period to win their tenth straight home game 18-8 over the Whitby Warriors. Their last loss at Tony Rose goes back to July 15, 2022 and the first round of the OJLL playoffs, 10-5 to the Oakville Buzz.

Tied 2-2 midway through the period, back-to-back cross checking penalties to Whitby both resulted in power play goals – first from Trey Deere, and then from Amos Whitcomb, his second of the night. The teams would trade goals again before the end of the period, which saw Orangeville lead 5-3.

It didn’t take long in the second for Whitcomb to complete his fourth hat trick of the season. Less than two minutes in, and just 47 seconds after Liam Matthews scored, Whitcomb made it 7-3. He’d score his fourth later in the period, on the power play, which would lead to five straight Northmen tallies in just over five minutes. All told, Orangeville scored nine goals in the period to lead 14-7 after two.

If the lead wasn’t out of reach then, it was shortly thereafter. Deere, Whitcomb and Joey Spallina combined for three more goals in five minutes in the third, leading to an eventual 18-8 final score, and an unblemished 14-0 record on the season.

Amos Whitcomb led the way in terms of goals, scoring five (and one assist), but it was Koleton Marquis who led all runners with 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists). It’s the second time this season and third time overall Marquis has hit double-digit points in a game. Trey Deere (3 goals, 6 assists) and Joey Spallina (3 goals, 5 assists) were not far behind.

It was another solid game from Chris Origlieri who stopped 36 of 44 shots for the win. He has only allowed double-digit goals once this season, and just four times in his OJLL career (3 seasons).

Lucas Littlejohn led the way for Whitby with six points (4 goals, 2 assists).

Both teams are at home on Tuesday night: the Whitby Warriors will host the Mimico Mountaineers (8-5) at 7:30, and the Northmen will welcome the Six Nations Arrows (6-7).

All of Orangeville’s remaining six games are against the three teams that missed the playoffs in 2022 (Six Nations, Brampton, Kitchener-Waterloo).
