Orangeville Northmen Historic Run Continues In Mimico

On Tuesday night, the Orangeville Northmen would become just the fifth team in Junior A history to start a season with 13 straight wins. Standing in their way, the Drummond Street Bowl in mid-playoff form, playing host its third game in four nights, and the Mimico Mountaineers who have won four of their seven games at home this season. As they’ve done 12 times prior, the Northmen packed up with a win, and another historic milestone winning 13-7.

Adam Power would start between the pipes for Mimico, with Mountaineers starting goalie Nate Whittom out of the lineup. Chris Origlieri for Orangeville. Both teams have found success this season when able to put runs together. After Trey Deere opened the scoring, Mimico found their first streak scoring three goals in 3:33. It was then an 11 minute span before the next goal, from Jameson Bucktooth on the power play. He’d add a second a few minutes later, but Mimico would lead 4-3 after the first.

Bucktooth kept going in the second, opening a three goal run with goals from Koleton Marquis and Liam Matthews. The teams traded goals just past the midway mark of the second to see Orangeville lead 7-5 heading to the final frame.

It was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish thanks to a six goal run through the first half of the third period. The final three from Bucktooth, Deere and Marquis came 1:39 apart. Mimico would add two more, but it was not enough as the Orangeville Northmen win 13-7, and become just the fifth Junior A team to start a season 13-0.

Jameson Bucktooth (4 goals, 2 assists) and Trey Deere (3 goals, 3 assists) led the Northmen with six points each. Koleton Marquis also had a hat trick.

Mimico’s Finn Thomson, the OJLL points leader, was held to just three points, all assists. It’s just the third time since his rookie season, and second this year, he’s been held goalless. CJ Kirst (3 goals) scored his first career OJLL hat trick to lead the Mountaineers. Lucas Dudemaine (2 goals) was the only other multi-goal scorer.

Orangeville’s next chance at history will come at home on Sunday against the Whitby Warriors (6-8) while Mimico will be off until Monday, when they travel to St Catharines (6-7).
