In the opening game of the Iroquois Trophy Finals Tuesday night, Adam Poitras scored a hat trick in the third period where the Whitby Warriors outscored the Toronto Beaches 6-1 en route to an 11-7 win.
Tied 1-1 midway through the first, the Beaches scored twice in eleven seconds and would lead 3-2 after one.
After giving up a goal to Jacob Hickey, Whitby answered with a pair of goals, the first from Parker Pipher on the power play, to tie the game. Jakson Raposo answered with a power play marker of his own, and the teams traded goals to end the period. Toronto led 6-5 heading into the third.
Toronto took four minor penalties in the third period, leading to three Whitby power play goals. Two were part of a five goal run for the Warriors, scoring the final three in less than two minutes. Pipher’s second of the game, also a power play marker, inside of two to play capped the 11-7 victory.
Brock Haley scored four goals, bringing his playoff total to an OJLL leading twenty-six through nine games. Adam Poitras, meanwhile, finished with seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) to move into first place in points with fifty-two. Lucas Littlejohn had five (2 goals, 3 assists) and Parker Pipher registered four (2 goals, 2 assists). Kaleb Martin stopped forty-four of fifty-one shots for the win.
Josh Fairey led the Beaches with a pair of goals. Third place in league playoff scoring, Willem Firth, was held to two points (1 goal, 1 assist). Will Johnston made thirty-eight saves.
It is just the second home loss of the playoffs for the Beaches, who dropped a 14-9 decision at Ted Reeve Arena to the Peterborough Lakers in game two of round one.
Game two of the best-of-three series is scheduled for 8pm Wednesday night at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby.
